Constitutional Amendments

2022 Ballot

Amendment summaries:

  • Amendment 1: Makes it illegal to deny employment based on a person’s membership in, affiliation with, resignation from, or refusal to join or affiliate with any labor union or employee organization. (Article XI of the TN Constitution). This enshrines existing “right to work” laws passed in 1947.
  • Amendment 2: Clarifies the exercise of the powers and duties of governor during disability and assigns the responsibilities to designated individuals. (Article II and III of the TN Constitution).
  • Amendment 3: Changes the constitution to state that slavery and involuntary servitude, except as punishment for a person who has been duly convicted of crime, are forever prohibited in this State. (Article I , Section 33 of the TN Constitution)
  • Amendment 4: Deletes that “ministers of the gospel and priests of any denomination” are prohibited from holding a seat in either House of the legislature. (Article IX of the TN Constitution)

Constitutional Amendment 1

  • A “yes” vote means that the new language will be added to the Constitution.
  • A “no” vote means that the new language will not be added to the Constitution.

Constitutional Amendment 2

  • A “yes” vote means that the new language will be added to the Constitution.
  • A “no” vote means that the new language will not be added the Constitution.

Constitutional Amendment 3

  • A “yes” vote means that the current language will be deleted from the Constitution  and the new language will replace it.
  • A “no” vote means that the current language will remain in the Constitution and the new language will not replace it.

Constitutional Amendment 4

  • A “yes” vote means that current language will be deleted from the Constitution. 
  • A “no” vote means that the current language will remain in the Constitution.

Passing a constitutional amendment:

  • An amendment must get more “Yes” than “No” votes.  The number of “Yes” votes must also be over 50% of the total votes cast for all candidates in the gubernatorial race.
