Ruth Walker, PhD is a developmental psychologist and assistant professor at The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga. She has been a member of the League of Women Voters since 2017, and previously served as the Vice President of the Southwest Missouri League of Women Voters prior to moving to Chattanooga in 2020. As a researcher and educator, her work focuses on social injustice across the lifespan (e.g., sexism, ageism, anti-LGBTQ+ bias) and finding evidence-based ways to address injustice.
While working with the League of Women Voters in Southwest Missouri and teaching a Policy and Aging course, she became interested in evidence-based methods to encourage and empower people to vote. This presentation will cover what she found after going through the research. Specifically, she will discuss voter turnout, identify common barriers to voting, and describe the methods that researchers/organizations have found work to get people to the polls.
